享保15年。かつて藩の不正を訴えたが認められず、故郷・扇野藩を出た瓜生新兵衛は、連れ添い続けた妻・篠が病に倒れた折、彼女から最期の願いを託される。「采女様を助けていただきたいのです.」と。篠の願いと藩の不正事件の真相を突き止めようと、故郷・扇野藩に戻った新兵衛。散り椿が咲き誇る春―ある確証を得た新兵衛は、采女と対峙することとなり、過去の不正事件の真相と、妻の本当の想いを知ることになるのだった.。
